Turn Your Social Media Fear Into Fire And Fuel
ARE YOU A bit like a firework? Do you show up on social media, make a post that goes out with a big bang, and then disappear faster than a wisp of smoke in the dark November sky?
I’m putting my hand up to answer ‘yes’ to that question because for a long time I resisted getting visible on social media. I’d do a few hit and run posts then get bored by the fact that I was rarely interacting with a person in real time.
For 2023 I’ve pledged to be consistently visible and deliver a higher level of value to my clients and community.
I reframed posting on social media from ‘talking to myself’ to, ‘what if we thought of all of our business posts as an ongoing firework display?’
For example, one little post on social is like one tiny spark of a firework; it’s not very inspiring on its own and it doesn’t give you a proper demonstration of what’s truly possible.
And, if you continue to add new business posts, memes, audio or videos you begin to add the rest of the sparks that create one spectacular firework display. By continuing to generate high value engaging posts you are adding different types and colours of fireworks - and that means you’re more likely to attract and keep the attention of your community who might prefer to watch a Roman Candle to a rocket.
Unlike bonfire night, your online community will have expectations when they show their loyalty by liking or following your page; how would you feel if you turned up to watch a real-life firework display and had to wait weeks for anything to happen? It’s not so much that your followers are going ‘to check’ if you’ve posted, but if there is nothing new for a long time they’ll either drop you a message to see if you’re ok, or they’ll wander off in search of another shining light to top up their inspiration.
With the right mindset shift you can turn your social media pain back into pleasure. Here are my top tips for avoiding going out like a damp squib:
Get clear on why you find social media a hassle; what story are you telling yourself?
List 10 ways your business community could potentially benefit your social media feed.
Think of 10 empowering reasons it’s good for you to have an online presence (this is your new story).
Note the ways you can repurpose content without lots of extra work.
Post (or schedule them) when your audience is most likely to be online and always acknowledge by liking or responding when they do engage.
Be relatable by sharing behind the scenes posts.
When I stopped thinking of social media as a lot of hot air and noise and recognised that it’s a valuable way for me to communicate with my community, it encouraged me to treat it like a friend, (not an enemy), used well it can explode your business with extraordinary results.
