5 Reasons Spring Cleaning Your Office Is Good For Your Mind

I HAD A GOOD laugh with a hypnotherapy client the other day. I suggested she might like to listen to a podcast while she was dusting.

Cue fits of giggles.

She doesn’t dust. She doesn’t own a duster. She had no idea when she last dusted, or if she EVER dusted.

Do you dust? Maybe you think life’s too short for housework but hands up, we have lots of wood in our home and I enjoy a little dust and polish now and then!

At the risk of sounding like a housewife from the 1950s, the scent of the Beeswax polish and the general act of getting into all the wee nooks and crannies makes me happy. I’ve got friends who say they don’t have ‘time to dust’, but for me it feels like my house is ‘in order’ if it’s had a wee buff and shine.

Spring cleaning your office is like going to the hairdresser then the beautician (and maybe even the dental hygienist). Pour love and care into your surroundings and you’ll get all the feels right back!

Spring cleaning, or having a clear-out, is good for your health and wellbeing, and it increases positivity (as long as you don’t moan the whole time!). Here are my top five reasons for getting stuck in:

1) Reduces stress & boosts wellbeing.

Cleaning and organising your personal workspace will help you to create headspace and shake off those lingering winter blues.

The simple, ordinary act of waving a little yellow duster about creates the feeling that all is well in the world because, in that moment, there is nothing more pressing that you need to do!

Sorting through clutter is emotionally liberating; knowing that everything is as it should be helps me relax even more. As if all that isn’t enough, it’s good for your immune system.

If you’re anything like me, clearing out your office will reveal several sticky notes and to-do lists that are ready for the b-i-n, which instantly makes you feel more in control!

2) It gives you a mini workout.

Housework in general is a pretty good work out. Before we had all these time saving gadgets we didn’t need to go to the gym!

If you are strategic with your dusting you can enjoy a good stretch as well as burning some calories.

3) It saves you money.

This might come as a surprise but when you become aware of all the stuff you own (and need to take care of), you’ll think twice before you splash out on something else.

I have a friend who bought the same book three times before realising they already owned copies!

When you clear your clutter or dust underneath (yes, underneath), you’ll find you already have endless hours of memories to keep you entertained. Those memories will lift your mood up or down, either way you’ll feel better for the mental processing!

4) Less stuff = greater appreciation.

Do you have any idea how good a hard-boiled egg can taste when you’ve been trekking in the mountains?

When we narrow our attention and remove the noise of all the stuff that once competed for it we appreciate what we have so much more.

A clean house with less stuff helps you enjoy your home at its best.

5) It turbocharges your productivity.

When you can quickly and easily lay your hands on what you need you are far more efficient and able to complete the task in hand.

Growing up it drove me crazy that the Sellotape had no designated space and every time we needed it we ended up buying more. I’m enough of a geek now that I have one Tupperware box with Sellotape, scissors, name tags and a pen!

It helps me sidestep the stress and increases the chances of me getting gifts to my friends and family on time.

So, whether you’re already feeling on top of the world or just need a little lift throw the windows open, stick the music on and bring some of that refreshing spring energy into your office!

Spring cleaning doesn’t just stop at your office you know, pay attention to the thoughts that are in your mind.

➡️ What thoughts would be good to get rid off?

➡️ What attitude or belief is holding you back?

➡️ What worries or circular thoughts are disturbing your peace?

If you know you’re ready to let them all go and buff up your self image so you’ve got more confidence and positivity to enjoy a better life drop me a line.

What’s your number one reason for spring cleaning?  Peer pressure? In-laws coming to visit? I’d love to know. Come over and share on Facebook.
